On August 1, 2025, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints made a significant announcement regarding its area leadership changes for the 2025-2026 period. These leadership assignments, effective immediately, reflect the Church’s efforts to adapt to its expanding global membership while continuing to streamline its administrative processes. One of the most notable changes was the creation of a new Canada Area, with leadership based in Calgary, Alberta.
Leadership Changes for North America
The Church also renamed several of its North America areas to better reflect their regional significance. For example, the North America Central Area is now designated the United States Central Area, and similar changes have been made across other U.S. regions. These organizational shifts aim to strengthen the leadership and governance of Church members in key geographic regions.
Additionally, Elder Kevin R. Duncan, previously serving as a General Authority Seventy, has been called to serve in the Presidency of the Seventy, replacing Elder José A. Teixeira, who had held the position since 2018. The new leadership team brings fresh perspectives to the Church’s global strategy and is poised to guide the organization through its continued growth.
The Role of Seventies in Church Governance
In total, 16 new General Authority Seventies were sustained during the April 2025 General Conference, with their assignments now officially in place as of August 1. These leaders will be responsible for overseeing various regions, including the United States Central, Northeast, Southeast, Southwest, and West areas, as well as the newly established Canada Area.
A Global Focus in Organizational Changes
These adjustments are a reflection of the Church’s ongoing efforts to ensure effective governance in light of its growing global membership. As the Church continues to expand in regions like Africa, Asia, and South America, these changes will allow for more localized and efficient leadership that is better equipped to serve members worldwide.
