Rebuilding Lives Beyond Housing: The George & Jaqui Maree Stamas Fellowship Creates Pathways to Independence

Biz Weekly Contributor

The George and Jaqui Maree Stamas Fellowship supports women’s housing recovery through confidence building, skills development, and long term independence.

For women who have experienced homelessness, domestic and family violence, and prolonged instability, securing safe housing is a critical first step. However, rebuilding confidence, restoring independence and creating a positive future often requires much more than a roof over one’s head.

Recognising this, the Women’s Housing Company established the George & Jaqui Maree Stamas Fellowship, a 10-week trauma-informed program designed to help women strengthen their confidence, reconnect with their communities and take meaningful steps towards personal and economic independence.

Program Design and Support Model

Combining expert facilitation, individual life coaching, peer support, creative activities and practical skill development, the Fellowship addresses the social, emotional and economic challenges many women continue to face after securing stable housing.

Participants are supported to develop communication, budgeting, goal-setting and self-advocacy skills while building supportive networks and exploring pathways to employment, education, volunteering and community leadership.

Impact and Outcomes

The impact has been significant. In 2025, every participant reported increased confidence and self-belief, while 87 per cent said they felt more hopeful about their future after completing the program. Many formed lasting friendships and support networks, with one participant describing the Fellowship as having “permanently altered my life trajectory.”

These outcomes reflect the Women’s Housing Company’s belief that lasting change is achieved when housing is combined with opportunity, connection and personal development. By investing in women beyond the point of crisis, the Fellowship is helping participants move forward with greater confidence, resilience and purpose.

Partnership and Vision

The Fellowship was made possible through the generosity and shared vision of George Stamas AM and Jaqui Maree Stamas, whose commitment to supporting vulnerable women is focused on creating lasting opportunities rather than short-term solutions.

George Stamas AM, Founder and Executive Chair of GJK Facility Services and a Member of the Order of Australia, has built a reputation as a business leader and philanthropist dedicated to improving lives through education, employment, healthcare and community initiatives. Together with Jaqui Maree Stamas, he has championed programs that empower women to overcome disadvantage, achieve independence and build stronger futures for themselves and their families.

Community Giving and Philanthropy

In addition to supporting initiatives such as the Fellowship, George and Jaqui Maree Stamas have long encouraged charitable giving through their personal celebrations and community events. In lieu of gifts, guests are often invited to support selected charities through dedicated fundraising campaigns, creating a meaningful way to celebrate while helping organisations that transform lives. Their belief that every gathering can also be an opportunity to give back reflects their ongoing commitment to philanthropy and social impact.

A Model for Lasting Change

The George & Jaqui Maree Stamas Fellowship is a powerful example of what can be achieved when safe housing is complemented by practical support, encouragement and belief in human potential. More than a program, it is an investment in confidence, dignity and the opportunity for women to create the futures they deserve.
